St Mary’s Church

Debenham, mentioned in the Doomsday book, with King William owning property in the area, is close to the source of the River Deben.

The town has many timber-framed buildings in the high street, often leaning on each other for support. On Saturday night locals leaving the local hostelries adopt similar postures.

Overlooking the rooftops of the town is St Mary’s Church, the tower is the oldest part and dates back to Saxon times.

In 1970 the centre of Debenham was declared a conservation area.
